About

Alonso Ortega joined DRAW immediately following graduation in 2018, adding to the team a bold, yet deeply searching approach to pursuing curiosity, questioning convention, and creatively navigating the problem-solving process. Alonso’s student work embodies a broad variety of project types, from theoretical to experiential to traditional, each of which allowed him opportunities to explore and learn the nuances of the design process. Understanding the importance of dialogue throughout any design process was a particularly enlightening lesson for him, highlighting the necessity of communication – from verbal to written to all types of visual – throughout the process.

At DRAW, Alonso applies his ever-evolving skillset to our projects with one eye trained on honing his skills and the other focused on achieving technical excellence in his work.

Interesting facts about Alonso:

  • For the sake his performance art exhibit, Preserving Bodies, Alonso once fully submerged himself in 40 gallons of canola oil for 150 minutes. He considers the experience one of the most defining moments of his life to date.

  • Counted among Alonso’s many skills are numerous magic tricks, photography, writing, cooking (according to his mom), and driving cars really, really fast. (Alonso’s Mom, if you are reading this, he told us to say, “Just kidding!” about that last one.)

  • One stormy night in Alonso’s childhood, he and his extended family all witnessed an alien clinging to the kitchen skylight. He recalls the clarity of detail of the creature’s hands as they gripped the window. (*shudder*)

  • Alonso is in the process of writing a series of books focused on topics that significantly impact his life. The first takes on masculinity and its faults.
