DRAW is designing a house for a family of four on a tight sloping lot in the Westwood Neighborhood in Kansas City. The family - drawn to the layout of one of DRAW's courtyard houses - desired a home that similarly connected perimeter living spaces through the use of a centralized outdoor room. Rather than viewing the sloping site as a challenge to be overcome, the design team embraced it as an opportunity to provide a variety of spaces that connect to the exterior in different ways - from living spaces connected to each other via a bridge, to a southwest facing tower at the rear of the site that anchors the entire house form. The scheme is a particularly well-executed example of how interlocking interior and exterior spaces can expand the spaciousness of a home without having to enclose extra square footage.
