Location: Kansas City, Missouri
Working with the City of Kansas City, Missouri’s Neighborhood & Housing Services Department, the DRAW team was charged with the planning and design of two, single-family residences and one duplex housing prototype capable of being inserted onto vacant City-owned lots located throughout the urban core.
Each form of the 1400-1600 square foot homes was derived from basic geometric shapes and proportions based on Kansas City’s predominant historic typologies. Extremely efficient at only 1200 square feet, the single-family designs include 3 bedrooms, 2.5 bathrooms and compact the service spaces—laundry closets and bathrooms—into service “bars” allowing the main living areas to remain open and allow for flexible use. The duplex design includes 2 bedrooms and 1 bath with the ground floor unit offering accessibility thoughtfully and abiding by universal design codes. Large front porches engage the street while historical paint colors pull familiarity throughout the neighborhood. A two-car garage is accessible via the alley.
