Location: Powell Gardens, Kingsville, Missouri

The Light Wings Pavilion creates an ever-changing experience through the interplay of light and shadow. Designed and created for Powell Gardens’ Fairy Houses and Forts exhibition, the interactive pavilion was constructed of salvaged 2×4 drops – a common waste product of any construction site. These leftover boards were arranged around a radius creating a relatively smooth interior surface and a dynamic honeycomb exterior texture. Sunlight enters the elliptical structure through a CNC cutout in the roof casting illuminated fairy wings along the opposite wall. A unique, welcoming place is created for both adults and children, who are invited to interact with the light by imagining themselves with their own fairy wings.

The Light Wings Fairy Fort was featured on the front page of the Kansas City Star’s FYI section May 21, 2012
