About

Before joining DRAW in 2018, Nicole Mater worked with Pelli Clarke Pelli Architects (PCPA), providing parametric design expertise for multi-million square foot projects. She helped to establish and lead PCPA’s first advanced computational design research group. Her specific field of interested within the realm of parametric architecture is in environmental performance and data-driven design.

She holds a M.S. in Advanced Architectural Design from Columbia University, and a Master of Architecture with Distinction from the University of Kansas.

Originally from the outskirts of St. Louis, Nicole is a proud Missouri native. Much of her young life was spent on a suburban “farm,” where her family raised chickens, ducks, rabbits, and mini horses as a hobby.

Interesting facts about Nicole:

  • Nicole knows her way around car maintenance and repair. As a teen, she spent time helping out at her dad's hobby auto shop after school, changing oil, repairing dings and scratches, and swapping out parts on many different kinds of vehicles.

  • Nicole never leaves home without a tube of red lipstick.

  • Food is a significant influencer for Nicole. Her favorite city is Paris...not just for the fashion and Parisians' affinity for red lipstick, but largely for the city's world-class FOOD offerings. She moved from the East Coast back to the Midwest...not just for the nice people and attainable quality of life, but for the fill-your-soul FOOD available here. She gardens...not just for the meditative nature of it, but because of the amazing FOOD one can make with fresh, just-plucked-from-the-dirt produce. And, naturally, one of Nicole's favorite hobbies is cooking FOOD...particularly old family recipes.

  • Though she counts her self-inflicted torture of pursuing two graduate degrees among the more insane decisions she's made thus far, Nicole also counts it as one of her more cherished life experiences. As a bonus, the mental intensity also created great opportunities for her to seek refuge in the comfort of a few guilty pleasures, namely 80's pop music and reality TV.
