The product of an architecture family (both parents and both siblings are designers), Olivia developed an early interest in art and design. She graduated with a Master of Architecture from the University of Kansas and participated in KU’s study abroad program in Paris, France, taking classes at Val de Seine and working for Paris design firm, Ibos & Vitart. Following graduation, Olivia spent a year exploring her interest in furniture design and fabrication, working at a custom furniture studio, where she studied as an apprentice under founder, designer and master craftsman, Matthew Castilleja. Olivia is a member of the KC Woodworking Guild and the Woodturners Guild.
Olivia’s interest in and experience with materiality and craft informs her approach as a young designer.
Interesting facts about Olivia:
You might mistake Oliva as somewhat reserved or perhaps risk-averse, so let’s go ahead and shatter that misconception: Olivia once jumped off the 216-metre (that’s 706.661 feet) Bloukrans Bridge, which boasts the world’s tallest bungee jump. Enough said.
Spending nine months in Paris would make any human fall in love with the city, and Olivia is no exception. Her university's study abroad program allowed her to fully immerse in the Paris lifestyle. Among her more memorable moments there was her visit to a bar called The Little Red Door. Instead of offering a conventional cocktail menu, they give you a book of art and you choose the visual that most appeals to you. The owners commission different artists to try the drinks and then create a visual piece inspired or influenced by the cocktail. Only in Paris...
In another life Olivia's career path might have been that of a painter or a furniture designer. Concurrent to her chosen architecture path in this life, however, Olivia is also a wood worker. Her preference is to use hand tools as opposed to machinery, finding it to be a more relaxing, meditative experience.
